A Wastewater Treatment System: What is it?

In areas served by municipal sewer services, wastewater management is rarely a concern. However, for unserved areas, regulations stipulate that it is prohibited to directly discharge wastewater into the environment, whether into the ground or into waterways. A wastewater treatment system safely treats wastewater from a home's daily activities without contaminating water resources.

Some definitions: Black/gray water:

Black water: wastewater from toilets containing suspended fecal matter, potentially dangerous to human health.
Eaux grises : les eaux de cuisine, de salle de bain, de buanderie et d’autres appareils ménagers, à l’exclusion des toilettes.

Eaux usées domestiques : c’est la combinaison des eaux noires et grises.

How it works! :

The primary sanitation system, such as the septic tank, captures and retains solid elements and greases present in domestic wastewater. The sizing of primary treatment depends on the number of bedrooms in the residence and other drinking water needs.

When soil conditions permit, the modified purifier element, also called “purification field”, is proposed. This is a device intended to carry out treatment by purifying wastewater through natural soil by infiltrating the water into the ground.

In case of restrictive soil (permeability, rock or water table too high) advanced secondary treatment (TSA) is necessary. This is normally followed by a polishing field. For sites where infiltration is not possible, tertiary treatment (TT) systems, such as disinfection and/or phosphate removal, can be offered. In some cases, we can also direct the water towards a watercourse.
